BN07-34: Archery Tournament Draws Over 50

Recent History – 2001

By Yose Cormier, Daily News Staff

The Dawson Creek Sportsman Club held its first 3D Archery Shoot this weekend.

Fifty-one archers participated in the event, with some as young as six years old and others over 60.

Participants travelled from Prince George, Mackenzie, Grande Prairie as well as Chetwynd and the Dawson Creek area.

“It was an excellent competition. We had good verbal responses from out of town competitors who have participated in shoots similar to this. We are very pleased with the turn out and response,” said Allan Hickey, one of the event organizer and a board member of the Sportsman Club.

The 3D shoot format uses animal targets with an indicated kill zone, not rings (bullseyes) to shoot at. Archers had three rounds and could score as high as 600 points.

“The expertise comes from not maiming the animal and getting a perfect kill,” said Hickey.

A number of the targets have been acquired through local business donations while others were brought by members of the Sportsman Club.

There were categories for men, women, and children in various bow categories.

The Sportsman club was pleased to see a number of kids and parents turn out.

“A lot of families came for this and that was great because we are trying to promote this as a family-oriented sport. Anyone can take part in archery. It is a very disciplined sport and the kids know the rules and follow them,” said Hickey.

With the success of their first shootout, the Sportsman Club plan on holding another one next year around the same time.

If anybody is interested in joining the club, or if younger children want to join, they can contact the Sportsman’s Club for more information.

“Children can take part even if their parents aren’t around. We have all adult supervision evenings and they can borrow equipment, given lessons. We are covered for insurance. If children wants to join, all they need is their parent’s authorization. It is a very disciplined sport. There is no playing around, and the kids know this and abide by the rules. It is good exposure, and a good learning activity.
