13-016: Policing in Fort St. John

By Tom Redhead

From 1951 to 1956 Cst/Cpl George Redhead ran this detachment.

1951 …. Cst. “Woody” Wodfin was the other constable stationed there.

From 1952 to 1956 the following constables were also assigned to Fort St. John:

Brian Hole, ??? Price, Jack Alwell

The detachment stayed at the Fort St. John Airport until after Cpl. Redhead left in October, 1956.

The Police Office at the Fort St. John airport contained the RCMP station, the court house, the jail, living quarters for our family and for the other constable (single quarters for him).

On the corner of 100 Street and 100 Avenue there was a pole with a red light on top. When there was an emergency and they needed to contact the police the light switch in the Fort Hotel was turned on.

Cst. Redhead was briefly assigned to Dawson Creek to run that detachment but was transferred back to Fort. St. John after about six months.
