Canada Post announced its new 10th Street postal outlet Thursday. The crown corporation is moving its downtown outlet just a block away from its current location at 10401, 10th Street. Construction has been ongoing since the summer.
“We’ll be opening a new facility with a new image,” said Neil VanNoortwyk, operations supervisor for Canada Post. “We’re driving towards getting with the times, so to speak.”
The outlet’s move from its current home will mean a more appropriate space for the post office. The downtown office’s current location used to act as a home and sorting plant for the postal outlet, which has since been relocated. Since the move, Canada Post has only been using a small portion of the existing location.
“We had way too much space,” said Van Noortwyk.
Key features of the new outlet include doors and a counter for the handicapped. There’s also room for more post office boxes to be installed if they’re needed. Everyone who currently has a mailbox at the outlet will be notified of the move before it takes place.
Van Noortwyk said Canada Post is targeting a move-in date of mid to late November. He said employees seem to be looking forward to the change.
“We had consultation about it not too long ago, and they seem pretty excited about it.”
