DAWSON CREEK — The land needed to extend the walking trail from 17th Street to the highway has been purchased, the Dawson Creek Rotary Club announced.
“We are very excited about the possibilities for the development of this green space,” said Rotary Club president Paul Gevatkoff in a letter to city council.
Gevatkoff said the club hopes to have the trail completed this year, which is also the 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club in Dawson Creek.
And over the long term they hope to utilize the land for more than just the walking trail.
“Our long range plan is to keep it as natural as possible, hopefully developing a park area for the community, with ponds for natural habitat, smaller walking trails off the main one, re-introducing trees and natural plants back into the area and at the same time making it a place where people can go and enjoy,” Gevatkoff said.
“We are aware that this is important wetland and will endeavour to keep it as such.”
Mayor Blair Lekstrom said it’s volunteer groups like the Rotary Club who make projects like the walking trail possible. “We can’t give enough recognition to these groups,” he said.
