DAWSON CREEK — Fisheries Renewal BC will invest $23,000 to begin restoring fish habitat and enhancing stocks in the Peace-Liard region.
The Crown corporation will provide the funding to assist with the initial organization of a partnership group that will deliver its salmonid renewal program in the Peace-Liard region.
“With the recent oil spill disaster in the Pine River, it appears there is an urgent need for community groups, local government and First Nations to join forces in protecting and managing community watersheds over the long term,” said Reg Whiten of the Boreal Centre for Conservation Enterprise, who is helping organize the new partnership group.
“Fisheries Renewal BC investments are helping local people rebuild the fishery in other parts of the province, and now that program will be extended here,” said Corky Evans, minister of agriculture, food and fisheries, in a news release.
Province-wide, the salmonid renewal program has a budget of $10.4 million for 2000-2001.
