07-005: Competition Very Keen at Rolla Festival

From the Peace River Block News, June 12, 1936
The number of entries in the Rolla Music and Drama Festival on Friday and Saturday must have surprised sponsors and adjudicators. Eighty-five entries with approximately 175 people took part in the competitions and the adjudicators had no easy job. In many of the classes a single point separated the winner from the losers and in the junior piano class it was a tie. Awards were distributed to all parts of the region, the rural schools making a good showing.

It would be hard to pick out individuals for commendation as all showed a very good standard. However, mention should be made of the Riverside School Orchestra, consisting of seven wood winds and one dulcimer. These instruments were fashioned out of bamboo. The children appeared to understand their instruments thoroughly and the effect was quite pleasing.

At the Grand Concert the audience showed their appreciation of all performances but insisted on Mrs. Modhal and Mrs. Ivers giving an encore number of Norwegian Folk Dancing. The Sunset Prairie Male Quartet and Miss Fanhauer were also recalled.
